Initial Care F/X Knife Injury Child-8

Depicts simulated injury to a 7 y/o child’s lower leg apparently inflicted by a knife. A child appears quiet, and a knife appears on the floor between the child’s legs. Bystander seems to have applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding and is attempting to assess for a distal pulse.

TEACHING POINT. Noting the lack of gloves - could be due to gloves being unavailable to lay provider or due to a training situation.

Depicts simulated injury to a 5 y/o child’s lower leg apparently inflicted by a knife. A child appears quiet, and a knife appears on the floor between the child’s legs. TQ-Self Application-Arm - 1

Depicts a simulated lower arm injury with bleeding. The injured person is self-applying a tourniquet. The simulated wound (laceration or incision) is an apparent knife injury. Appropriate direct threat care, assuming the environment is still considered to be a hot zone.

TEACHING POINT: Note that the TQ is being applied high up the arm and is sufficiently tight to stop the bleeding.

Depicts a simulated penetrating knife wound. It appears that a tourniquet has been effectively applied and that EMS is examining the knife’s stability in the injury which will likely require immobilization before transport.

TEACHING POINT: Note that the examination of the knife’s stability and likely subsequent immobilization occurs after a TQ has controlled the bleeding.

Depicts a simulated injury to a victim’s chest. Simulated injury appears to be a jagged wound that is actively bleeding. Not apparent whether the injury was deep enough to create an open thoracic injury.
