Initial Care F/X Knife Injury Child-7

Depicts simulated injury to a 7 y/o child’s lower leg apparently inflicted by a knife. A child appears quiet, and a knife appears on the floor between the child’s legs. Bystander seems to have applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding and is attempting to expose the wound area.

TEACHING POINT. Noting the lack of gloves - could be due to gloves being unavailable to lay provider or due to a training situation.

TEACHING POINT. Noting that tearing/cutting through the wound area of the clothing, which provides exposure, also destroys potential forensic evidence and should be avoided.

Bystander seems to have applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding and is attempting to assess for a distal pulse. Immediate care person is also providing emotional support.

F/X Knife-Trauma-Arm---Impaled-1

Depicts a simulated penetrating knife wound. It appears that a tourniquet has been effectively applied and that EMS is examining the knife’s stability in the injury which will likely require immobilization before transport.

TEACHING POINT: Note that the examination of the knife’s stability and likely subsequent immobilization occurs after a TQ has controlled the bleeding.
